Website Chatbot or WhatsApp Chatbot: Which Do You Need?

22 October 2026

Almost every small business owner in India asks the same question sooner or later: should I put a chatbot on my website, or run a WhatsApp chatbot? Both answer customers automatically, but they suit different businesses and cost very different amounts of effort. This is a plain comparison, so you can pick the one that fits, or know when to use both.

Where your customers already are

A website chatbot talks to people who are on your site: someone who found you on Google, clicked a link on Instagram, or typed your address. They are reading about you right now and have a question they cannot find an answer to. A website chatbot catches them at that moment, before they leave.

A WhatsApp chatbot talks to people who are already messaging you. In India, that is how a huge number of customers prefer to ask a question or book. If most of your enquiries today arrive as WhatsApp messages, that is where the work is.

So start by looking honestly at where your enquiries come from. If they mostly come from your website and Google, begin with a website chatbot. If they mostly come as messages, WhatsApp matters more.

Setup and cost

A website chatbot can be live in an afternoon. You write what customers ask, test it, and paste one line of code. With the Business Assistant in Ail for Business there is a free trial of 50 messages, and paid packs start at Rs 499 for 800 messages. You do not need anyone's approval to start.

A WhatsApp chatbot that replies automatically on your business number is a bigger job. It runs on WhatsApp's business platform, which has its own account setup and approval steps, rules about message templates, and charges for messages that are set by WhatsApp, not by whoever builds your bot. It is very doable, and many businesses need it, but it takes longer and costs more to get right.

What each does best

A website chatbot is best at answering questions while people browse: prices, timings, location, what you offer, how to book. It is also good at capturing a name and phone number from someone who was about to leave, and at showing you which questions your page fails to answer.

A WhatsApp chatbot is best at ongoing conversations with people who already know you: booking confirmations, reminders, order updates, and quick replies to repeat customers. It is a better fit when a conversation has several back-and-forth steps.

Which should you pick

Choose a website chatbot first if you have a website that gets visitors, if you want results this week, if you are watching your budget, or if you are not sure yet how much chat your business gets. It is the cheapest way to learn what customers actually ask.

Choose WhatsApp first if almost all your business already comes through WhatsApp, you take bookings or orders by message, or you need to send reminders and updates to existing customers.

Use both if you are growing. A common and sensible setup is a website chatbot that answers questions and, when a visitor wants a human, offers your WhatsApp number to continue the conversation. You get the low cost and quick start of the website, and WhatsApp for the customers who prefer it.

A simple way to begin

Put the website chatbot up first and put your WhatsApp number in its contact line, so any visitor who wants a person can reach you in one tap. Read the weekly list of questions it could not answer. After a month you will know exactly what customers ask, in their own words, which is exactly what you need to build a good WhatsApp assistant later, if the volume justifies it.
